The demand for inverter mini split system installations is growing rapidly due to the versatility, functionality, and electrical efficiency of these units. As a result, inverter mini split system installations and servicing are becoming more common for individuals in the HVACR trade. Technicians must know the step-by-step service procedures associated with these systems and how they differ from traditional single speed systems.
This book was written to help demystify the operation of inverter mini split systems and to explain associated concepts and procedures, in a language that is easy to understand. System parts are examined individually, electrical/mechanical operation is discussed, and related troubleshooting steps are given. By examining each component individually, readers can more easily digest the information and build upon their knowledge, as they progress through the text. The goal of this book is to equip technicians with the knowledge they need to service these complex systems.
Procedures Included:
· Line Set Connection
· Leak Testing and Vacuuming
· Charging and Recovery
· Guidance on Checking the Charge
· Power and Communication Wiring
· Electrical Component Troubleshooting
· Common Problems and Diagnosis

The numbers behind the trade
Why mini splits need their own book
Employment of HVACR mechanics and installers is projected to grow 11% from 2025 to 2035, much faster than average, with about 40,600 openings a year.

Since January 1, 2025, new residential and light-commercial AC and heat pumps must use refrigerants with a GWP of 700 or less. That rules out R-410A and brings in the A2Ls, R-32 and R-454B.

“The readings you trust on a ducted split will walk you into the wrong diagnosis on an inverter.”
A variable speed compressor moves the target. Superheat and subcooling numbers that mean something definite on a fixed speed system shift with whatever the inverter has decided to do at that moment, and techs who charge a mini split the way they charge a condenser end up chasing a fault that is not there. Inverter Mini Split Operation and Service Procedures starts with how the system operates and builds the procedures on that.
Inverter systems run the indoor and outdoor units over power and communication wiring, so a wiring fault shows up as a code or a dead board rather than a pressure. The book covers power and communication wiring and the electrical component troubleshooting that follows from it.
Procedures included
Line set connection, leak testing and vacuuming, charging and recovery, guidance on checking the charge, power and communication wiring, electrical component troubleshooting, and common problems and diagnosis. 326 pages.
What's inside
Four things that make it usable on site
Each component examined on its own, then how the inverter runs them together, so the readings make sense.
Line set, leak test, vacuum, charge and recovery in the order you do them on site.
What you can and cannot read on a variable speed system, and how to check it properly.
Power and communication wiring, component testing, and the common faults that come in on service calls.
Real pages from the book

Every procedure is written with the reading, the figure and the reasoning side by side. Pages 63 to 67 cover the electronic expansion valve and the S1, S2, S3 communication wiring: what each part does, what to measure, and what the numbers tell you.
Commissioning is where the callbacks come from.
A bad flare, a short vacuum or a charge never corrected for line set length will all run on handover and fail in August. The installation and commissioning sections are written as a sequence you can follow on site, so the unit you leave behind stays left behind.
pages covering operation, installation, commissioning and diagnostics, with a companion workbook and PowerPoint sets available separately.

One book for the shop and the classroom.
Craig Migliaccio taught HVACR to high school and adult students before any of this was a book, and he still runs an HVAC contracting business. The procedures are written so a first-year tech can follow them and a senior tech can hand them to the crew.
Instructors and training programs can pair the book with the companion workbook and the PowerPoint sets built from it. A Spanish edition is also available.

Yes. That one covers refrigerant charging and service on ducted air conditioning systems. This one is about inverter mini splits, which operate differently and are diagnosed differently. Techs who work on both usually want both.
Craig Migliaccio, owner of AC Service Tech LLC. He holds an HVACR Master License in New Jersey, is licensed by the state to teach HVACR, Sheet Metal and Building Maintenance, has over 16 years in the field and owns an HVAC contracting business.
This listing is the printed paperback, shipped to you. The same title is also sold as a digital download on its own listing.
No. The companion mini split workbook is a separate listing.
It is written around how inverter mini split systems work rather than around one manufacturer, so it applies across brands. Always use the manufacturer literature for a specific model's figures.
